Stop buying *design*
First published August 13, 2026
Most brands treat design like a one-off PT session.
Book it, sweat once, skip the program.
Then wonder why nothing's changed six months later.
NGL, I get it. If we’re talking gym memberships, my own success stayed in that one hazy summer of ‘99. Joined the gym, went once. (Personal learning: Firm outdoor fitness advocate, here).
Me, happily swapping gym for coffee
But after 20 years working in brand, here's what I see:
With no strategy to drive it, design is a bandaid.
You book the thing, get the dopamine squirt from the fit-class (or the beautiful new logo), and you congratulate yourself on your achievement.
And you should. We got started!
BUT
If you don’t have the plan to follow through? Your ongoing success can be akin to an icecream in high-summer.
What do I see again and again (and again)?
Whether you’re…
A new-to-market DIY darling
A growth-focussed SME hopping between freelancers
Well-established (and big agency models have never fit).
Strategic, business-minded design is core to your business’ health system.
Not a ‘nice-to-have’.
My MO is simple: Your senior thinking partner who can help diagnose the problem, shape the strategy and make the work.
So that people say this about our partnerships, years later:
The website that still converts, multi-algorithm updates later?
Still earning it's keep
The brand whose founder still answers the phone three years in?
Still earning it's keep
The visual identity that lives on, three team changes and 13 years later?
Still earning it's keep
The brand system that made room for the market adaptation no one saw coming?
You guessed it—still earning it's keep
Next time you tackle a *design* brief, remember:
Quick-fix design costs now.
Strategic partnership pays for years to come.
Plan for the whole health system of your business (not a bandaid for the symptom).
